Carson City

Applicants needed for city shade tree board

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council.

There are four volunteer openings to be filled. The Shade Tree Council provides advice on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City.

For these vacancies, the terms expire January 2008. A minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month is expected. All members will serve without compensation. The council will make its recommendations of qualified residents to the Board of Supervisors, who will appoint members to the board. Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to the Carson City Executive Offices.

All applications submitted will be considered public information. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Rally for troops is Saturday downtown

American Legion High Desert Post 56 will hold a rally for the troops from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in front of the Legislative Plaza at Fifth and Carson streets

All veterans are invited. Bring a flag or poster supporting the troops.

Fall hike, meeting set at Silver Saddle Ranch

Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch will hold a fall hike and general meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the ranch.

Join them for a hike through the ranch and experience the historical and cultural significance of the area. The ranch is off Carson River Road. Call 884-1570.

Topaz Ranch Estates

Flu shots and more offered Saturday

Flu shots, pneumonia shots and free blood pressure checks will be offered from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire Station, 1476 Albite Road in Topaz Ridge Estates. MedDirect Urgent Care, the TRE Volunteer Fire Department and the Topaz Lake Volunteer Fire Department are providing this service.

Seniors on Medicare Part B will not be charged for flu or pneumonia shots, as MedDirect Urgent Care will bill Medicare directly on their behalf. All others will be charged $18 for flu shots and $25 for pneumonia shots. Free blood pressure tests will be offered by members of the two fire departments.Call 741-1139.

Douglas County

New event coming up features table settings

"Adventures in Table Setting," a first-ever event for Douglas County, will feature 20 tables designed by: Joyce's Jewelers, Cooks Pantry, Party Store, Cheese Company, and Candles & Crafts. Twelve individuals, including first lady Dema Guinn, have also entered designs, creations featuring whimsical, elegant, retro, holidays designs to delight the eye.

Adventures in Table Setting will be held at the Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Funds are to be used for high school scholarships and political education through the Douglas County Republican Women.
