Ruby Herman just came home from her first year of school at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M. The 14-year-old is a former Carson Middle School student pursuing an educational path that will directly prepare her for a military career.
She has lived her entire life in Carson City and has achieved a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do that she earned at Chi Kwan Tae Kwon Do here in Carson City.
At the end of NMMI's academic year on May 13, she was awarded Best New Cadet of the Year from her troop and the H.P. Saunders, Jr. Commandant's Award for Most Distinguished Cadet of the Sixth Freshman Class, which is for overall achievement in academics, athletics, leadership and military bearing.
She also received two varsity letters in sports: one for track and one for cheerleading.
Her goal is to go to a military academy and become a career military pilot. Her inspirations were Reuben Law, her great-grandfather, who was Nevada's last-living World War I veteran before his passing in January, and her father Brandon Herman who, while an active Marine at Pickel Meadows, was killed in a car accident when she was 8-months-old.
She is the daughter of Bretia Herman and granddaughter to me and my husband Dave, all of Carson City.
