Cattle Women's dance Saturday in Smith Valley

The Western Nevada Cattle Women's annual Dinner, Dance and Auction begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Smith Valley Community Hall. Dinner is at 6 p.m. with the auction and dance to follow with live music from Buffalo Country.

Western Nevada Cattle Women is a nonprofit organization interested in promoting beef consumer information and education. The annual dinner and dance is the primary fund-raiser for its scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded to qualified high school seniors from Douglas, Ormsby, Washoe and Lyon counties of Nevada and Mono and Alpine counties of California, who are interested in furthering their agricultural studies in accredited two- and four- year colleges or universities.

Tickets for the dance are $15 for adults and $7 for ages 4-12 years and age 3-younger are free.

Tickets will be available at the door or can be reserved by calling Rika McKinney at 265-2271.

First ever Legislative coin to be minted Thursday

For the first time, the Legislative commemorative coin will be minted in gold (.9999 percent gold). Two gold coins of approximately two ounces will be minted Thursday just after noon at the Nevada State Museum on historic Coin Press No. 1. Own a solid gold commemorative coin and support your favorite charity at the same time.

There are two ways to own a coin:

Gold Coin No. 1: Silent auction. Stop by or send your silent auction bid to the Legislative Gift Shop by March 22.

Gold Coin No. 2: Raffle tickets are $5 each and can be purchased through March 25 by cash, check or credit card through the Legislative Gift Shop.

Tax help available at FISH

Free tax-preparation assistance in preparing 2004 tax returns is being offered to Carson City area families. The assistance program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and FISH at the FISH classroom, 138 E. Long St., Suite C. They also offer IRS-approved Electronic Filing (E-File).

IRS-certified volunteers will be available on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. through April 9 to help local taxpayers prepare their 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ tax returns.

Volunteers will also provide guidance on individual tax questions. A limited supply of IRS forms is available on-site.

Appointments can be made by calling the FISH office, 882-8448, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

Individuals should bring the tax package they received in the mail, wage and earnings statements from employers (Form W-2), interest statements from banks (Form 1099), a copy of last year's return if available and any other relevant information concerning income and expense.
