Costella continues to be strong in meet

Carson High graduate Kiel Costella, who will be a sophomore at Villanova, continues to turn in strong efforts at the Speedo Nevada-California Sectionals being held at the Clovis West Olympic Complex in Fresno, Calif.


On Friday, Costella finished the 400-meter individual medley in four minutes, 56.11 seconds, beating his best time by three seconds. He was seeded 75th and finished 65th.


On Saturday, Costella finished the 400 freestyle in 4:19.70, beating his best time by five seconds. In his first 200, Costella finished in 2:07.33, beating his beat time in the 200 free by two seconds.


Today, the final day of the meet, Costella will swim in the 100 butterfly and the 1,500 free.


Sun Devils let one slip away


The Sierra Sun Devils baseball team let one slip away at the Joe DiMaggio World Series on Saturday near Napa, Calif., losing to the Tri-County (Calif.) Gamblers 7-6 in eighth innings.


Three players who have signed to play with Western Nevada Community College did have solid efforts. Douglas High graduate Chad Walling went 3-for-5 with three RBI, Spanish Springs graduate Brad Carlson hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and Tyson Jaquez went 1-for-3.


The Sun Devils (28-11) left 11 runners on base. With the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Sun Devils had the winning run at third with one out, but hit into a double play. Tri-County scored the winning run in the eighth on a bases loaded walk. The Sun Devils will play at 1 p.m. today in an elimination game against San Francisco.
