Driver passes out, dies after hitting Spooner median

A Sacramento man died Monday night from an unrelated illness after striking the concrete median on Spooner Summit, an official said Tuesday.

The 82-year-old man, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, was westbound in a Toyota pickup when he hit the median about 6 p.m., according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

"According to the witness statements, he was driving very erratic, swerving lane to lane and then he swerved to the left and hit the concrete median," said Trooper Chris Austin.

Austin said the driver was conscious and alert when rescue personnel arrived. The man said he was not injured in the crash and blamed fatigue for the accident, Austin said.

About 90 minutes after the accident ,the man collapsed.

"We attempted CPR. Unfortunately, it didn't work," said Austin.

An investigation into the exact cause of death is ongoing. Investigators have an idea of an existing medical condition that may have contributed to the man's death, but Austin declined to reveal the condition.

Both lanes of westbound Highway 50 were temporarily closed following the accident.

In unrelated incidents, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported at least two spin-outs near Spooner Summit as snow moved into the area Monday evening. Another spin-out occurred on Kingsbury Grade about 7:30 p.m., deputies said. No injuries were reported.
