Dayton and Yerington boys basketball win

Dayton and Yerington are now in a two-way race for the Northern 3A regular season title.

The Dust Devils came through with a valiant fourth quarter comeback on Wednesday at home to beat Incline 58-52, eliminating Incline from the league title race in the process.

Dayton improved to 11-4 in league play and stayed a half-game ahead of the Lions, which moved to 10-4 after beating Fernley on Wednesday. The Dust Devils finish with Fernley on Friday.

If Dayton beats Fernley, Yerington must win at Incline on Friday and against Sparks on Saturday to share first with the Dust Devils. If the two club end up tied, the tiebreaker could come down to how the rest of the teams in the league finish.

Yerington owns the next tiebreaker because it beat Dayton in the second round. The regular season champion will host the Northern 3A playoffs.

The Dust Devils trailed Incline 50-40 when it outscored Incline 18-2 in the fourth quarter and finished the game with a 16-0 run. Trent Wood, who scored 21 points, highlighted the run with a breakaway dunk.

"It was again another barn burner," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said. "We were down the entire game. It was a great environment.

"The two teams played extremely hard. Through three quarters they pretty much dominated. We really stepped up to the challenge."

Dayton also shot well from the foul line, hitting 10-of-13. Travis Wood scored 16 points.

It was senior night as Dayton honored its three seniors, Trent Wood, Danny Hopper, who scored eight points, and Daniel Schierholt.

The Yerington boys basketball team held onto its league lead by jumping out to a 24-11 lead after one quarter and never looking back. Ryan Rife scored 21 points and Dylan Johnson added 19 points for the Lions.

"They just really worked hard and moved the ball well," Yerington assistant coach Jeff Rife said. "Defense was strong and we rebounded strong. We got up on them pretty early and we just stayed composed."
