A fifth-wheel motorhome was gutted by a quick-moving fire in a back yard in the 400 block of Parkhill Drive on the east side of Carson City around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

"The homeowner was very lucky," said Dan Shirey, Carson City Fire Department battalion chief. "When we saw the smoke, we thought the fire might have spread to some of the nearby structures."

The fire seemed to have been triggered by some kind of explosion that did limited damage to a wooden fence.

Shirey says it could have been much worse. "With the wind and heat, the fire could've easily spread," he said.

But thanks to a quick reaction from the fire department, the flames didn't get that chance.

At press time, Shirey said a fire investigator was on her way to the scene, but the fire didn't appear to have anything to do with the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Whatever the cause, the trailer was fully engulfed in a matter of minutes.
