GENOA - A man who recently served with the U.S. Army in Iraq was killed early Thursday morning in an accident along Jacks Valley Road.
David Sieben, 24, of Genoa, was killed after his Volkswagen sedan went off the west side of Jacks Valley Road about three miles north of Genoa and rolled over several times.
Sieben was thrown from the car, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Troopers reported it didn't appear he was wearing his seat belt.
Sieben is the son of John Sieben, owner of Silver State Pools and General Builders and the Inn Cognito in Genoa.
David Sieben served with the 1st Engineer Battalion, Ist Infantry Division while in stationed at Camp Junction City.
A 1999 graduate of Carson High School, Sieben obtained his real-estate license when he was 19, but decided to join the U.S. Army instead of pursuing a career in real estate.
He spoke to schoolchildren in Carson City and Douglas County when he was home on leave February 2004.
At the time, he told a Nevada Appeal reporter that veterans had written to him overseas and had taken him out to eat while he was home.
"I haven't met better people in my life," he said. "They wrote me letters while I was in Iraq, and now they are taking me to lunch."
Letters aren't the only thing people sent to Sieben.
A Nevada flag donated by a retired sergeant major was signed by patrons at the Inn Cognito.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is seeking potential witnesses. Anyone with information should call 688-2500.
