Workshop on arts includes all disciplines

An opportunity to be involved in the arts is on the horizon when theater, dance, music, writing and visual arts are explored at a three-day arts education workshop in Reno.

The seminar will be Friday through Sunday at the Nevada Museum of Art and Galena High School.

The welcoming reception is 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the museum and includes a tour of four museum exhibits: "A Ceramic Continuum: Fifty Years of the Archie Bray Influence," "Roman de Salvo: Power Maze 3," "Pasha Rafat: Glass Tubes" and "Robert Morrison: A Retrospective."

At 6:30 p.m., a keynote speaker will lead a discussion with political leaders as part of a "Meet your Legislators" panel.

"The discussion will provide a venue to teachers and artists to voice their opinion to their constituents," said Rachel Hartsough, program manager for the Nevada Arts Council arts and education program.

On Saturday, workshops include children's book illustration and writing, hand-built pottery, wire workings, pastel drawing, animation and creative writing.

"There are some really interesting workshops you might take," Hartsough said. "Mary Bennett is one of the presenters. She's doing a theater- improvisation workshop. Ray Valdez is doing arts alternatives for at-risk youth. They're all really wonderful. So many things are being presented across so many areas."

Dinner will be provided Saturday evening at Galena High School. Diners can work on squares for The Comfort Quilt.

"The organization was founded after Sept. 11," Hartsough said. "They made a quilt for every child who lost a parent. It's a really special thing."

Group activities are 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The conference concludes Sunday with two group projects.

About 100 people are expected to attend. Participants can receive one undergraduate or graduate credit at the University of Nevada, Reno or an in-service credit.

Cost is $120 for members of the National Art Education Association or $130 for nonmembers.
