Rankl wins league title

Carson High's Liz Rankl left no doubt who the Sierra League's best golfer was during the last regular season match.

Rankl wrapped up the league's individual title for lowest score during the regular season by winning Tuesday's event at Reno's Rosewood Lakes. Rankl fired a 10-over-par 82 to take first.

The Senators settled for third as a team in a close three-way race between themselves, South Tahoe and Reno. The Huskies won with a 475, South Tahoe was second with a 478 and Carson took third with a 490.

Also for Carson, freshman Michelle Kop shot a personal best 94 and Samantha Wang broke 100 for the first time when she shot a 97.

Sophomore Sarah Metcalf fired a 107. "She's come along," Carson coach Terry Gingell said. "She's playing really well."

Lydia Peri shot a 110 for the Senators. "She did play real well," Gingell said. "She hit the ball well. She just didn't hit it straight."

Also for Carson, Grace Ray shot a 111. "She just didn't play that well," Gingell said. "It just didn't happen for her."

Carson now heads for zone to be held on Oct. 11 and 12 in Fernley. The top two teams will advance to the NIAA 4A State Championships and it figures that Galena and Reno will be the teams to beat.

Gingell said if his team puts it all together over both days, it may have a chance to overtake Reno.

"I really feel that we've got a chance," he said. "We might just nip them. You never know."
