Tigersharks have another strong day

Jamie Engan and Matt Grunert won titles for the Carson Tigersharks, who had another solid day on Saturday in the Intermountain Swim Classic at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The Tigersharks, who were in first place in the meet after Friday, fell back to second place after Saturday as the Multnomah Club of Oregon moved into the lead. The meet is shaping up to be a battle between Multnomah and Carson for the team title.

One of Carson's strongest events, the 800-meter freestyle will be held today. The meet concludes on Monday.

Engan won the 400 individual medley in five minutes, 21.12 seconds while Grunert won the 13-14 boys 200 breaststroke in 2:54.58. Grunert dropped two seconds off of his time and just missed the Far Western qualifying standard.

Also for the Tigersharls, Kevin Dyer dropped his time by 15 seconds in finishing second in the 13-14 boys 100 I.M. in 5:38.70. Another highlight for the Tigersharks was the return of Tara Theilemann, who just finished her freshman year at Alabama.

Theilemann took third in the 500 free (29.58) and the 100 backstroke (1:133.75). In addition, Kiel Costella took fourth in the 400 I.M. (5:09.90).

Other highlights for the Tigersharks were Dyer taking sixth (29.12) and Grunert placing eighth (29.33) in the 13-14 boys 50 free. John Wandel took fifth (27.15) and Jake Oxoby was sixth (28.09) overall in the 50 free. Wandel was also third in the 100 back (1:08.53).

In the 200 breaststroke, Hilary Schlager was 10th (3:08.08) and Lauren Metcalf was 12th (3:09.83). Rebekah Niehoff was 17th in the 100 back (1:20.64).

Carson's younger swimmers also had a strong day. Competing in their first long course meet in the 9-10-year-old 50 free. Jared Link, Aaron Castillo and Jeroen Bottenberg all swam well and Bottenberg and Castillo broke the one-minute mark. Jessica Fahrenbruch had a strong time on 3:02.77 in the 9-10 girls 200 free.

Jacob Branco was fourth in the 9-10 boys 200 free (3:17.78) and Tim Grunert wsa sixth (3:28.10). In her first 100 butterfly, Morgan McEwan was 10th in 11-12 girls in 2:21.12.

Caroline Suh finished the 50 free in 32.94, just missing a Pacific Age Group Championship qualifying time in 11-12 girls. Rachel Clark also had an excellent time of 3:48.14 in the 11-12 girls 200 breaststroke.
