Locals help lead Wild hockey to victory

Carson City's Matt Scherer and Jonathan Singer and Minden's Devyn Hotho helped the High Sierra Wild Pee Wee team pull off a split against the high-powered Oakland Bears in NORCAL youth ice hockey action over the weekend at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

The Bears came into the series with a 9-2-1 record. Oakland won the opener 8-1, but High Sierra came back to gain a split with a 4-2 win. Scherer cotinued his hot streak at goalie, making 38 saves.

Jimmy Thorngren scored the Wild's first goal off an assist from Hotho, who went on to score the second goal on assists from Torngren and Payton Guttry. Less than a minute after the Bears tied the score 2-2 in the second period, Cooper Stanley picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, weaved his way through the Oakland defense and fired the puck into the upper right-hand corner of the net to give the Wild a 3-2 lead.

Stanley later scored again, placing the puck into the upper left-hand corner of the net to make it 4-2. The Wild was outshot 40-21, but Singer helped lead a solid defensive effort.

In the opener Oakland built an 8-0 lead before Guttry took a pass from Thorngren and sent the puck in to the upper right-hand corner of the net.

The Wild will play its last two games of the regular season on March 13 and 14 against the Santa Rosa Flyers and the first place Berkeley Bulldogs. The Wild consists of players from Carson City, South Tahoe, Gardnerville, Minden, Reno, Sparks and Truckee.
