Kids, patriotism and a helping hand

Cory King, director of youth programming at the Carson City Library has a fun event coming Saturday. "Discover New Trails ... Read", is a youth summer program designed for children to encourage reading throughout the summer. So if you're looking for an educational program come down and have a pancake breakfast served up by Kiwanis of Carson City. Entertainment will include exciting stories from storyteller Bob Kanegis and more. Sign up for the reading programs and get your face painted.

Kiwanis of Carson City is always helping. Last week, I spent time with Virginia Nuzum, Bryan and Vi Bibee, Ray Fredericks, Tom Gibbons, Norine Krulevicth, Ronni Hannaman and Shelly Plaut who all took time off from their work to help children from Carson Middle School and Eagle Valley Middle shop for graduation outfits at Mervyns. Each student was sponsored with a $100 gift certificate and had these outstanding chaperones helping pick out the right tie or shawls to match their outfits. One little girl had never been inside a department store and really had a lot of fun shopping with Virginia. If you like this idea and would like to sponsor a child this coming August for Back to School Shopping Spree look below to see how you can help.

The Elks Lodge is sponsoring a Flag Day Ceremony June 14 at the lodge. In 1885, BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin public school, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as "Flag Birthday." In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as "Flag Birthday," or "Flag Day." Finally, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 each year as National Flag Day. And people say the paper is not educational.

Next the Sierra Nevada Lutheran High School needs some eager golfers to come out and support the first annual golf tournament. All par three holes will have special hole-in-one prizes, including a $25,000 cash grand prize, 2003 Chevrolet Blazer SUV donated by Terry Libbon owner of Garnerville Car and Truck Center give them a call to reserve your foursome.
