A man pleaded no contest Friday to a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon by use of a firearm when he shot at his roommate and her ex-husband last fall.
Marco Joaquin Muiretta, who allegedly held an armed four-hour standoff with law enforcement on Sept. 11, 2002, faced a maximum of 14 years in state prison, but now faces up to five years in exchange for his no contest plea. Sentencing is scheduled for March 10.
The 31-year-old's trial was scheduled to begin today. He remains in El Dorado County Jail on $152,500 bail.
Muiretta had a long-range rifle that he allegedly fired inside a Los Angeles Drive home on Sept. 11 about 6:15 a.m.
He shared the residence with a female roommate and her ex-husband. The shot went into the shirt of the ex-husband, pierced a wall, and entered a nearby home. After the shooting, the two fled the house while Muiretta stayed behind.
The shooting caused a police standoff, evacuation of a nearby church service and a two-hour closure of a portion of Highway 50.
