Carson softball drops two

The Carson High softball team dropped its last two games of the Reed Easter Tournament on Saturday, losing to Livermore, Calif. 2-0 and Foothill of California 4-2.

Mandy Carvin pitched a gem against Livermore, striking out eight over six innings while giving up three hits in a complete game effort. But the Senators were no-hit in the game.

Against Foothill, Lindsay Farnworth went the distance, allowing eight hits while striking out four over six innings. The Senators scored in the second inning when Ariadne Gonzalez singled home Liz Rankl.

Down 4-1 in the sixth, Carson had a chance to tie the game, but could only score one run. Beth Henry scored on a wild pitch before the Senators left two runners to end the inning.

Gonzalez was 2-for-3 and Kaitie Vidovich, Lindsey Perondi and Henry all went 1-for-3. The Senators played well defensively on the day, not making any errors in the two games.

Carson plays on Friday in the Ceres (Calif.) Tournament.

DOUGLAS GOES 2-2

The Douglas High softball team went 2-2 in the Reed Tournament, beating San Lorenzo Valley, Calif. 3-1 and Spanish Springs 5-1. The Tigers lost to Reed 3-0 and McQueen 6-3.

Against San Lorenzo, Katie Pagen pitched a two-hitter, striking out four for the win. Douglas scored two runs in the third when Valerie Smith singled, Kayla Dunn walked and Stevie Smith and Jessie Kizer each followed with RBI singles.

In the fourth, Devon Bateman walked, stole second and scored on Dunn's single. Stevie Smith went 2-for-2.

Against Spanish Springs, Dunn pitched five shutout innings for the win, allowing one hit and striking out four. Stevie Smith allowed one run on one hit and struck out two over two innings.

Douglas scored four runs in the third, highlighted by Dunn's two-run home run. Kizer had an RBI single, Cassie Smith had a sacrifice bunt and Tasha McCann had an RBI single during the rally as well.

Kelly McKinnon hit a solo shot in the fourth and Bateman and Cassie Smith each added a hit.

Against Reed, Dunn allowed two runs on two hits in two innings while striking out four and Pagen allowed one run on one hit while striking out four over three innings.

Stevie Smith went 2-for-2 and Dunn and Pagen each went 1-for-2.

Against McQueen, Dunn belted a solo shot to tie the game 3-3 in the sixth, but McQueen scored three runs in the seventh. Pagen pitched a complete game, allowing five hits.

Douglas scored two runs in the fourth when Dunn tripled and scored on Valerie Smith's single. Pagen followed with an RBI triple. Bateman went 3-for-3 and Dunn was 2-for-3.

DAYTON SPLITS

The Dayton High softball team settled for a split against Manogue on Saturday, losing the opener 6-4 and winning the nightcap 7-4. Dayton (16-4-1) kept a solid hold of second place in the Northern 3A at 8-2, one game back of 9-1 Lowry. Manogue is 6-4.

Nicole Greer picked up the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out six. Keeli Garcia went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Natalie Malekos doubled with an RBI, Rachel Hurt went 2-for-4, Lacy Taylor was 1-for-1 with two runs, Jessie Ayres was 2-for-4 with two runs, Kaitlen McKinnon had a hit and a run, Vienna Cabrita was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Greer had a hit, RBI and run for the Dust Devils.

Greer was the losing pitcher in the opener after allowing four earned runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. Garcia allowed one run on one hit over 2 2/3 innings. Hurt went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run, Ayres was 2-for-4, Danielle Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with two runs and Garcia, Cabrita, Greer and McKinnon all added a hit.

Dayton will host a tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Edmonds Sports Complex. In round robin play on Monday, the Dust Devils will play Portola, Calif. at 10 a.m., Fallon's junior varsity at 1 p.m. and South Tahoe at 2:30 p.m.
