Carson girls golf struggles in opener

The Carson High girls golf team struggled in its opener on Wednesday at Sierra Sage in Stead.

Carson placed 10th with a 562 in the Northern 4A golf match. Galena placed first with a 473. Lux Gill led the Grizzles as she was the low score medalist, firing an 81 on the par-71 course.

Other team scores were: Wooster 487; Elko 496; South Tahoe 499; Reed 506; Spanish Springs 519; Reno 522; Douglas 539; and McQueen 539.

For Carson, Lindsay Farnworth was the only golfer who broke 100 with a 98. Senator coach Paul Croghan said that Farnworth had a solid round, overcoming a "couple or three bad holes in a row."

Other scores for Carson were: Ciarra Christian 115; Liz Rankl 112; Amanda Carvin 110; Megan Good 127; and Erica McAfee 128.

"That's the worse score she's had in three years," said Croghan about Christian.

"Hopefully she's got that out of her system. Ciarra's capable of shooting in the 80s. Liz I think is going to be able to do better than that."

Croghan said he's counting on his four most experienced players, Christian, Rankl, Carvin and Farnworth to improve. "They've got to play better and I'm confident that they will. We've got a lot of work to do to get into the top eight," said Croghan about the eight qualifying berths for the zone tournament.
