Carson volleyball sweeps by South Tahoe

With a dominant performance, the Carson High volleyball team clinched second place in the Sierra League.

Carson rolled to a 15-1, 15-10, 15-8 win on Thursday at home. "We played well," Carson coach Daryl James said. "I was happy with our intensity.

"I was happy with our effort. I was proud of them. We needed to win."

Carson jumped out to a 13-0 lead in game one behind the serving of Alyssa Wilson, who served for eight straight points. Wilson served for four points during the run. Colleen Doyle and Shannon Devereaux had kills during the rally and Devereaux went on to put away a kill on game point.

The Senators fell behind 9-4 in game two, but outscored the Vikings 11-1 to win the game behind the serving of Rachael DeRiemer, who served for eight straight points. Wilson and Kaitlin Brush began the comeback with back-to-back blocks.

Devereaux followed with two kills and a block, Wilson had another kill, DeRiemer served for two straight aces and Brush had another block to make it 14-10. Terri Niederer's quick hit off of Tabitha Adams' set put the game away.

Carson went on a 9-0 run in game three to take a 14-5 lead. Katie Lawson's ace helped spark the run and another quick hit by Niederer made it 14-5.

It looked like the Senators had won the game 15-5 and the match on a block by Niederer, but Carson was called for a violation on the play. Brush eventually put the match away with an ace.

DeRiemer had 10 kills, five aces and three digs, Devereaux had 10 kills, Niederer had 10 kills and four blocks, Wilson had four kills, five aces and four blocks, Brush had three kills and four blocks, and Adams had three kills, four digs and 40 assists.

"Tahoe is not as bad as they played," Carson coach Daryl James said. "We took care of business."

CHS Note: With a cumulative 3.7 grade point average, the Carson High volleyball team is on line to win its third straight state academic title.
