Rasner pitches gem for Senators

Jake Rasner has become the latest freshman phenom for the Carson High baseball team.

Rasner (3-0) provided a much needed gem for the Senators on Friday at the Wood Bat Desert Classic. Carson (15-5) dropped its first three games in the tournament, but behind Rasner came back to rout Braddock Holmes of Miami 10-1 on Friday.

Rasner pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out nine while walking none and allowing no earned runs. Meanwhile, the Senator offense broke out with 12 hits.

The highlight came when Murph Glover hit the only home run of the tournament, driving an impressive two-run home run over the 340 sign in left field. Carl Winter also reached base four times and has now reached base 14 out of 17 plate appearances in the tournament.

Rasner struck out six over the last three innings and retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced. Rasner struck out the side in the fifth and struck out four straight during one stretch.

Braddock took a 1-0 lead in the first on a bloop single and Carson's only error. After struggling defensively in two losses on Thursday, the Senators were solid on Friday.

"It was an outstanding performance by Jake against a real good ball club," Carson coach Ron McNutt said. "He was just in complete control the whole way.

"The kids played great defense behind him, which is something we didn't have on Thursday. The kids just turned it around themselves and played really great ball."

Carson took a 2-1 lead in the second when Willie Bowman tripled and scored on Neil Holmes' sacrifice fly. Ben Moore drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning to force in a run, making it 2-1.

The Senators scored four runs in the third. Winter walked to force in a run, Rodney Black had a two-run single and Glover walked to force in a run.

Glover belted his two-run shot in the fifth. In the sixth, Black walked to force in a run and Holmes, who had doubled, scored on a wild pitch to finish the scoring.

Owen Brolsma had two hits, including a double, Bowman, Glover, Black and Aaron Henry all had two hits and Andrew James hit safely for Carson, who will play in its final game in the tournament today.
