Wa-Pai-Shone coming to Gardnerville Elementary

MINDEN - Native American Day will be Friday, Oct. 8, as a schoolwide event celebrating Native American culture at Gardnerville Elementary School.

Students will go to five different centers and complete some in-class projects. Parents are invited to attend the special learning centers.

The centers will demonstrate:

Willow work.

Traditional structures, pine-nuts and stone jacks.

Paiute stick game.

Wa.Pai.Shone culture.

Indian dancing.

A special all-school assembly from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. will feature special Indian youth talent, said organizer Sherry Smokey, education director for the Washoe Tribe.

Starting at 5 p.m., families are invited to buy Indian tacos for dinner and stay to watch Indian children take part in dance and drum group performances, a fashion show and theatrical renditions of traditional Native American tales.
