Carson City is a step closer to finding a contractor to run the city landfill.
In November 1999, the city paid $61,700 for SECOR International to help the city create a plan to draw a new contractor.
SECOR recently finished that survey and the city's Health Department is getting ready to search for proposals from companies interested in running the landfill.
Carson City supervisors will receive an update on the process Thursday. Deputy Health Director Ken Arnold said a contract with a new company likely will head to the supervisors for approval by the beginning of June. The landfill has been operated without a contract since July 1996 by Waste Management Inc. and Arnold said a new contractor should take over in late summer.
The landfill takes between $1.3 million and $1.4 million a year to run and will probably cost about $1.8 million to run with a new contractor. There will be a rate increase, Arnold said, that is related to the $6.3 million needed to close the landfill on par with federal standards. The rates have not been set and will depend upon the contractor. The landfill is expected to last for another 18 to 20 years, Arnold said.
Supervisors will also consider:
- A revised plan for the Carson City Fairgrounds and Fuji Park. The $3 million vision for the fairgrounds was accepted by the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission. The plan was drafted between the parks department and the Fuji Parks Users Coalition. The plan puts all park and fairground uses including parking south of Clear Creek Road and the future Costco warehouse. The improvement list for the park includes more than 300 parking spaces, a $2 million events center and cart track, a 40-stall barn which would replace the old 20-stall barn and landscaping among other improvements.
The user's group and park commission want money from the sale of land to Costco to pay for the improvements. The city sealed a deal with Costco on April 27 and the price of the land was $3.7 million, over $1 million of which will be used for improvements to the site and Clear Creek Road.
Supervisors are being asked to approve the concept of the improvements. What will be done with the money from the Costco land sale will be decided at a later date.
