Free smoke detectors are available to any residents of the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District who do not have working smoke detectors in their homes.
The district covers the Highway 50 corridor from Mound House to Silver Springs and also includes Silver City.
Firefighters are reminding residents that smoke detectors should be checked twice a year. They recommend doing these checks when the time changes occur in spring and fall.
