Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., said he has moved a step closer to securing 4.48 acres of land on Beverly Drive from the Bureau of Land Management for Carson City.
Use of the land would be specified for the Carson City Senior Citizens Center and other projects.
The legislation was approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week and will now be voted on by the full Senate. The bill would transfer property ownership, located east of the center, from the bureau to Carson City.
Bryan has noted an overwhelming increase in the demand for senior services during the last few years and states the senior center has to expand from its current size to accommodate growth.
Plans for expansion include additional medical facilities and an assisted living residence. The property is currently vacant, but once was used as a warehouse and vehicle yard for the bureau's Carson City Field Office. When it was learned the agency would be leaving the premises, representatives from Carson City asked Bryan for his help in securing the property from the federal government.
Bryan said he will be asking leadership in Congress to take the vote as soon as possible.
