Yerington outlasts Dayton

Robert Albarran scored three goals, two on penalty kicks, to lead Yerington High School to a come-from-behind 5-1 Northern 3A boys soccer victory at Dayton on Friday.


Marc Wheeler 's early goal gave Dayton a 1-0 lead, but Yerington came back to score five unanswered goals en route to a win that improved its record to 2-1-1. Dayton dropped to 0-4.


Albarran converted a penalty kick to tie the score and Jesus Juarez scored off an assist from Jeff Bednark to give the Lions a 2-1 lead that stood at halftime. Albarran converted another penalty kick in the second half, Tony Gutierrez scored with an assist from Travis Lemos and Albarran scored again to complete Yerington's scoring.


Meanwhile, the Lions buckled down to play air-tight defense. Dayton had eight shots on goal, only two in the second half, against a Yerington defense led by defensive halfbacks Jay Sciarani, Michael Soukup and Gutierrez. Dillon Mudloff went all the way at goalkeeper.


GIRLS


Yerington 3, Dayton 1


Melinda Young and Melissa Jangula combined on three goals as Yerington defeated Dayton to improve its record to 3-1.


Young scored two goals, both assisted by Jangula. And Jangula scored an unassisted goal to round out the Lions' offense. Mariana Marquez scored in the first half for Dayton, now 0-4 on the season.


Yerington held a 2-1 lead at halftime.


Both Yerington and Dayton resume Northern 3A play today with games at Lake Tahoe. Yerington's girls and boys visit North Tahoe while Dayton plays at Tahoe-Truckee.
