Prep roundup - Carson, Douglas players reach regional tennis semifinals

Once again, Carson High's Polly Johnson and Amber Oglesby of Douglas are playing each other in the Northern 4A Regional Tennis Tournament. This time a championship shot will be at stake when the two meet in the girls singles semifinals in Reno.

Semifinal action in each of the singles and doubles divisions begins at 8:30 a.m. today at the Plumas Tennis Center. The winners advance to the finals and clinch berths for the state tournament next weekend in Reno. The top three finishers in each bracket qualify for state.

Johnson, a sophomore who came in as the Sierra League's No. 4 seed, won two matches on Friday, including a quarterfinal triumph over Douglas' surprising Samantha Barnes, 7-6 (11-9 tie-breaker), 6-0. The latter win was significant because Barnes, a junior who drew the Sierra League's No. 8 seed, upset High Desert League champion Laura Borghello of Tahoe-Truckee in the second round 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Oglesby, a senior bidding for her third trip to state, only dropped one game while defeating two opponents on Friday, including a 6-0, 6-0 verdict over fellow Douglas senior Kristen Garzapena.

Rachael Forbes of Galena and Sierra League champion Lara Burgarello of Bishop Manogue will meet in the other girls semifinal.

Last year, Johnson scored her first-ever victory against Oglesby in the tournament's third-place match.

On the boys side, Galena's Andrew Eklov and Jason Roach reached the singles semifinals. Eklov is the High Desert League's No. 1 seed.

Roach defeated Carson's Martin Ellis in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1. Ellis had advanced earlier with an exciting 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Incline's Chase.
