Douglas holds off Galena

RENO - Spurred on by big plays on both sides of the ball, the Douglas High School football team pulled out a 24-14 victory against Galena on Friday night.

Gabe Hatchett caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Jared Kenison on Douglas' opening drive and the Tigers went on to build a 17-0 lead on their way to winning the non-conference contest.

Douglas (2-1) needed some help from its defensive unit to hold off the scrappy Galena Grizzlies (0-3).

Galena took the opening kickoff and drove to the Douglas 16 on eight plays before Dan Bradshaw recovered a fumble for Douglas. Three plays later, Hatchett caught a pass from Kenison and won a footrace to the end zone for six points.

Galena mounted another drive early in the second quarter, only to stall when Douglas linebacker Jake Allsip came up with a big fourth-down stop at the 15.

The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 shortly before halftime when Andrew Andrews kicked a 21-yard field goal. The drive was sparked by runs of 32 and 26 yards by Drew Hall.

Monte McCann's 20-yard touchdown run extended the Douglas lead to 17-0 with 8:15 left in the third period, but Galena came right back with a score of its own. Luke Penrose returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards and on the first-down play, he burst 54 yards to the Douglas 1. Damian Rivadeneyra scored on the next play to cut the Douglas lead to 17-6.

McCann scored his second touchdown of the night on an 11-yard run with 11:36 left to play. The key play in the drive was Hatchett's 20-yard reception from Kenison on a fourth-and-5 play.

Rivadeneyra scored on another 1-yard run as Galena pulled to within 14-24, but the Grizzlies were stopped on two other fourth-down situations in the game's final five minutes.

Kenison completed 11 of 14 passes for 175 yards (no interceptions), with Hatchett catching four balls for 115 of those yards. Hall rushed for 86 yards on eight carries and McCann gained 82 yards on 16 carries for the Tigers.

Penrose rushed for 130 yards on 13 carries to lead Galena, while Rivadeneyra added 93 yards and two touchdowns on on 25 carries.
