MINDEN - A hearing for the girl charged in the traffic accident that killed a Carson High School drama student was delayed until Sept. 17 so she can seek legal advice.
Four members of 16-year-old Josh Spuehler's family attended a Douglas County court hearing Monday, holding up pictures of Josh just as the proceeding for Amanda Steichen, 16, ended.
Steichen burst into tears when Josh's mother, aunt and two cousins held up the photographs.
The Carson City girl is facing charges in a June 2 collision on Genoa Lane that killed Spuehler.
She is charged with failing to drive with due care and causing death in the accident. Spuehler was a passenger in Steichen's car. The teens were returning to Carson City after performing with the Young Chautauquans during Genoa's sesquicentennial celebration.
Steichen, with her parents, made an initial appearance Monday in juvenile court.
Steichen was also injured during the crash. She was treated for a neck injury at Washoe Medical Center.
Judge Michael Gibbons assigned the Roeser law firm to represent Steichen.
Gibbons assured the family that the victim would not be overlooked in the case.
Spuehler's aunt, Gigi Jackson, said after the hearing she wants Steichen's license suspended.
The boy's mother, Johnnie Spuehler, said she hopes Steichen "never drives that way again."
Two female cousins of Spuehler's who also attended the hearing, wore replicas of their dead cousin's football jersey bearing his number, 69.
They said a few classmates of Spuehler's at Dayton High School also wore the jerseys on Tuesday to keep the boy's memory alive. He attended Dayton High School where he played football before moving to Carson City.
