Historical Society celebrates Nevada’s birth month

The Douglas County Historical Society hosts a number of events this month. Their October Family Day event takes place Saturday at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville, as part of Main Street Gardnerville’s Fall Festival and Coffin Races. The DCHS booth features carnival games and activities for the whole family from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

As part of the DCHS ongoing Heritage Lecture Series, historian Wayne Scarpaci will speak about the “Hidden History of the Minden Airport” on Oct. 12 at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Main St. in Gardnerville.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the lecture starting at 6:30. Cost is $5, though Alpine, Dayton, Smith Valley, and Douglas County Historical Society Members are free.

Sertoma’s Oktoberfest returns

Carson Valley Sertoma Club hosts their annual Oktoberfest fundraiser 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

All aware welcome at the family friendly event, which features plenty of German-inspired fare; beer, wine and soda in the Biergarten; a costume contest and stein-holding competitions for adults, children’s games and play area; and a variety of craft vendor booths. The Bratwurst Band makes their musical return this year, and there are lots of prizes for the cash-only raffle including rounds of golf at the Edgewood, Genoa, and Carson Valley courses.

The club invites everyone to bring their “friends and family, and of course, your appetite and thirst.”

Sertoma stands for SERvice TO MAnkind, and the club’s event proceeds directly benefit non-profit agencies throughout the Carson Valley. The group meets weekly on Fridays from 7-8 a.m. at COD Casino, 1593 Esmeralda Avenue in Minden and meetings are open to all. Find more information at carsonvalleysertoma.org.


Fall clean up week

Douglas Disposal’s fall clean-up week takes place the week of Oct. 23-27. Active weekly residential customers in Nevada can place up to six 32-gallon cans (max weight 50 lbs.) and/or bags (max weight 35 lbs.) roadside on their regular pickup day for no extra charge. One-foot by three-foot tied bundles will also be accepted.

Appliances, computers, furniture, hazardous materials, tires, or TVs are not included in this offer and will not be picked up.

Prescription Drug Roundup

Partnership Douglas County and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office host a Prescription Drug Roundup 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 21. Three locations are participating in the local event:

• DCSO, 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden

• Roundhill Safeway, 212 Elks Point Road, Zephyr Cove

• East Fork Fire Station 4 (TRE), 1476 Albite Road, Wellington

Over-the-counter pills and vitamins; prescription liquids, pills, and patches; medication samples, and pet medications can be brought to any participating collection site. Medications should be left in the original container with any identifying information marked out.

Needles, aerosol cans, inhalers, hydrogen peroxide, ointments, and other liquids will not be accepted.

Prescription Drug Roundup events take place twice per year in April and October. They offer an opportunity to dispose of medications in a secure and effective manner, which helps promote safer and healthier communities.
