Wyatt Denny leads in Reno
Wyatt Denny of Minden came up with an ideal Father’s Day present on Sunday when he won the first round of bareback riding at the 98th annual Reno Rodeo.
Denny, 21, scored an 84.5 on Flying 5 Rodeo’s Something Cool to win the round at the Reno Livestock Events Center before a crowd that included his parents, Norm and Cindy Denny, and less than 40 miles from the ranch where he lives.
Then, for good measure, he won the second round Monday night to solidify his overall lead in the event. Denny’s score on Monday was 84.
Clayton Biglow of Clements, Calif., took second-place with a 83.5 on Rosser Rodeo’s Lil Josey. Denny and Biglow are travel partners, and in fact, are scheduled to appear today at a rodeo in Springdale, Ark., Thursday in Pecos, Texas, and Friday in Santa Fe, N.M. They will return Saturday for the Reno Rodeo’s short go.
Wyatt’s brother, 24-year-old Grant, is due to ride on Thursday and Friday.
Reno Rodeo notes: A new arena record was set by Sydni Blanchard of Albuquerque, N.M. with a 16.99 in WPRA Barrel Racing. The former Rookie of the Year beat Jane Melby’s previous arena record of 17.16 set on Friday night. On Sunday, during the NV Energy “Power of Good” Night, the Reno Rodeo Foundation awarded two worthy families with $20,000 each as part of the Reno Rodeo Wish program.
