Wrestling: Spates wins Fernley Invite
Pitted against the top teams in Northern Nevada over the weekend, the Douglas High wrestling team put up a number of strong individual showings at the Fernley Invitational.
Senior Dillon Spates continued his tear in the 130-pound bracket, going 4-0 with three pins to win the tournament title.
He defeated Reno’s Terry Mason 3-2 in a close final and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler for his efforts.
It marked Spates’ second tournament title in as many weeks as he won the Lawrence Miller Invitational in Martinez, Calif. last week.
The Fernley Invite has become a sort of preview of the Northern 4A Regional Championships, annually featuring the majority of Northern 4A programs, as well as smaller-school powerhouses like Fallon, Lowry and Spring Creek. Northern 4A favorites Spanish Springs, Carson and Reno were in attendance as well.
Douglas freshman Sullivan Cauley had a breakout tournament in the 160-pound class, going 4-3 with two pins to take sixth.
Daniel Lundergreen and Connor Jobe each went 3-2 with two pins in the tournament for Douglas.
Sean Merritt went 2-2 with both of his victories coming via pin. Nick Lufrano also had a solid weekend, going 2-2 with one pin.
After a two-week hiatus from league duals, Douglas will fight to keep its unbeaten Sierra League record intact Wednesday night at Wooster.
Douglas has scratched together three hard-fought wins over Manogue, Galena and Damonte Ranch, while Wooster’s lone loss has come at the hands of Sierra League favorite Carson High.
Should Douglas manage to get past Wooster tonight, that would set up a showdown for the Sierra League title next week with the rival Senators of Carson.
The Carson match will be at Douglas High at 6 p.m. on Feb. 2.
