Wrestling pays off

by Chuck Smock

The Douglas wrestling team saw a half-season’s worth of hard work pay off Saturday.

The Tigers, behind first-place finishes by Drew Hall at 160 pounds and Ben Johnson at 189 pounds, finished third at the Incline Tournament.

Galena won the tournament with 256.5 points. Incline was second at 188 points and Douglas scored 113.5 points to nip Truckee, which finished with 111.5 points.

Douglas trailed Truckee by six points heading into the finals of the 10-team event.

Hall defeated the No. 1 seed from Truckee to win the 160-pound title. And Douglas’ John Hillenbrand defeated a Truckee wrestler for third place at 152 pounds to help seal the team standings.

“I was surprised,” Douglas coach Mark Lilly said of his team’s third-place finish. “Their work ethic and conditioning are improving and they’re gaining more experience.”

Johnson, who started the season at 215 pounds, has dropped down to 189 pounds and continues to dominate. He is 19-3 this season with 13 pins. Eleven of Johnson’s pins have come in the first period, and five have taken less than one minute.

Johnson’s younger brother D’Art has dropped from 150 pounds at the start of the season and is wrestling at 125 pounds. He was 2-2 with one pin and finished fourth at Incline.

Lilly said the Johnson brothers are setting a good example on the mat and in practices.

“They both stay 15 to 20 minutes after practice every day to get extra conditioning and to drop weight,” Lilly said. “They’re doing it the right way: work, work, work and watch what you eat, no rubber suits and no crash diets.”

D’Art Johnson is 6-3 since dropping to 125 pounds.

Mark Magee also had an excellent tournament at Incline. He finished third at 135 pounds with a 3-1 record and three pins.

“Mark works his butt off every single day,” Lilly said.

Magee is 7-3 in his last 10 matches with four pins.

Kenny Moore was also 3-1 with three pins and finished third at 171 pounds.

Allen Anderson beat the No. 2 seed and took third place at 103 pounds.

Chris Baumgartner earned his first victory of the season, and did in style with a pin, to take third at 275 pounds. Baumgartner had lost 15 matches in his first wrestling season before the win.

The entire Douglas team rushed the mat to congratulate Baumgartner after the victory, Lilly said.

“That was exciting,” the coach said.

Douglas will host to Carson High today at 5 p.m. The Tigers will travel to wrestle in the Alhambra Tournament on Saturday.
