Walling Douglas athletic director
Marc Walling has been named Douglas High School’s athletic director to start the school’s 2017-18 sports year.
Walling replaces Jeff Evans as athletic director. Evans left after 13 years at Douglas to accept a position as principal at Eureka High School.
Among the other changes in the Douglas athletic program, Michael Rechs is the new athletic administrator. Laura Parks is also assisting with the athletic department, including cheer and line dance, and Kristi Cross returns as athletic secretary.
Roger Rusmisel has been named new head coach for the boys tennis program and Niki Hamzik head coach for girls cross country. Hamzik is a 2009 Douglas graduate.
Earlier this summer, Rick Smith took over as head coach of the girls soccer program.
Walling is a familiar face on campus, a 2003 Douglas graduate who has taught at his alma mater since 2008. He has served as head coach of the Tigers’ baseball program for the last two seasons plus he coached cross country from 2009-2013. Walling has been part of the football coaching staff since 2014.
A meeting of parents, athletes and coaches will be held on Aug. 23 from 6-8 p.m. in the high school commons area.
The first official action on the schedule is Aug. 22, when the Tigers’ girls soccer varsity and JV teams travel to Truckee for nonconference games.
The Tigers’ football team will host McQueen for a scrimmage on Aug. 19, starting at 9 a.m. with the varsity, JV and freshman teams. The season kickoff is Aug. 26 against the Rigby Trojans as part of the Rocky Mountain Rumble at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
