Trail run series to begin

Staff Reports

Ascent Runs is returning to host its fifth annual Winter Trail Series beginning with the Cold Turkey Run on Nov. 23 in Carson City.

The series is offering opportunities for local runners to meet once a month through March, according to Kevin Bigley.

“These are just low-key grassroots events designed to keep people motivated to stay fit over the winter,” Bigley said.

Each of the runs will be held on Saturdays starting at 9 a.m. at different locations. The Cold Turkey Run will be held at the Prison Hill Recreation Area, starting from the water tower on the hill overlooking Edmonds Drive and Koontz Lane. Distances of 4-mile and 10K-plus distances will be available for runners.

Bigley said distances for the runs during the series will vary, depending on trail conditions due to snow or ice on any given date.

The cost for the Cold Turkey Run will be $45, which includes a Patagonia long sleeve T-shirt. The fee will be $20 for each of the other events (T-shirts will not be available).

“We want to supplement their training over the winter months and utilize the trail systems in Carson City,” Bigley said. “It’s also a great trainer for the Escape from Prison Hill (half-marathon) in April.”

Other events on the series schedule include Running with Rudolph on Dec. 14, Centennial Slug It Out on Jan. 11, Love Can Be Cold on Feb. 8 and C-Hill, Run Hill, Ice on March 8. Ascent Runs also hosted the Genoa Peak Madathon in August.
