Staff Reports

Facing a traditionally tough and perennially powerful Reno High swim squad, the Douglas Tigers managed to turn in several strong performances last week at the Carson Valley Swim Center.

The boys’ 200 medley relay team of Trevor Schaff, Hayes Wilson, Andy Sturgess and Brian Barnard narrowly defeated the Reno squad, finishing in 1 minute, 56.06 seconds, just 0.20 seconds faster than the Huskies.

Sturgess took second in both the 50 freestyle (23.17), and the 100 free (50.20), and Schaff finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.40).

Matt Duguay finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.18.

On the girls’ side, Stephanie Denson finished second in the 50 free (28.81), Josefina Sigala took second in the 500 free (5:52.97) and Andrea Lindsey finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.60).

Katie O’Neill finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:11.56), Rachel Tappen took third in the 100 free (1:03.16) and Sigala and Lindsey finished third in the 200 IM (2:23.23) and 200 free (2:13.74) respectively.

Douglas gets the next several weeks to prepare before taking on Lowry at Northwest pool in Reno May 1 at 10:30 a.m.

The Tigers then face Reed May 8 and head to the Northern 4A Regional Trials at the University of Nevada on May 14.
