Tigers skate past Damonte Ranch

Staff Reports

The Douglas High School boys’ basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a staunch defense to shut down Damonte Ranch in the Tigers’ Sierra League opener Thursday night in south Reno.

Sophomore Kevin Emm scored 12 points to lead the Tigers in a 68-43 win while all but two of Douglas’ players put points on the board.

Douglas really had no offensive standouts, instead getting steady contributions from a majority of its lineup, which kept the Mustangs puzzled defensively throughout.

James Vacek and Keith Olson each finished with nine points, Jeff Nady and David Laird each had eight, Jordan Hadlock had seven and Mike Gransbery had six.

“The guys are getting to the point now in this offense where they know if they spread the ball around, they’re all going to get plenty of good looks,” Douglas coach Rob Streeter said. “They’re really starting to buy into what we’re trying to do. You can tell by looking at the box score. Everyone is putting points on the board and distributing the ball really well.”

Hadlock had a number of impressive plays, including a drive in early in the second quarter where we wove through three different players with a beatiful cross over dribble for the layup. He also bumped into the referee while chasing down a long pass, looped around to catch his balance and coralled the ball in time to make a reverse layup.

“I was really pleased with our effort on defense tonight as well,” Streeter said. “The kids really stepped it up and had that desire and intensity I look for. We got some nice rotations and some good stops in the second quarter especially.”

Douglas didn’t put together any big extended runs, but steadily built a lead and continued to put the game out of reach for Damonte.

The Tigers won each quarter, finally putting the game away with a 23-14 fourth.

“That hasn’t been happening yet, where we are able to finish well,” Streeter said. “Even in the games we’ve won, we weren’t getting a complete game out of the guys. I really liked the effort tonight.”

Former Tiger Chris Carlson scored 14 points to lead the Mustangs.
