Tigers qualify five for state track meet
The Douglas High School track and field team qualified five individuals out of the Class 4A Northern Zone championship, which was held Saturday at Reed in Sparks, for this weekend’s state meet.
On the boys side, Chris Griffith qualified in the high jump and Landon Smallwood qualified in the pole vault.
Griffith placed second on misses behind Bradley of Carson with a clearance of 6-0. Smallwood placed second with a personal-best clearance of 13-0, six inches behind event winner Puliz of Reed.
On the girls side, Kathleen McSweeney and Kelly Mogab qualfied in the 3,200 meters and Christina Morgan qualified in the discus.
McSweeney finished third with a time of 12:02.4 and Mogab finished fourth in 12:06.2. McQueen’s Laura Shackleton won the race in 11:49.1. Morgan placed third in the discus with a best toss of 99-9. Belding of Wooster won the event with a throw of 131-7.
Douglas placed eighth in both the boys and girls team competition. The Tigers scored 37 points on the boys side and 32 points on the girls side.
Reed won the 13-team boys meet with 160 points and the girls meet with 217.
Only the top four finishers from each event earned a berth into the state meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Cheyenne High School.
