Tigers pound Vikings
Douglas head coach Werner Christen said the schedule for the final two weeks of the season will be hectic, but he expects his team to maintain its focus on securing one of the four zone playoff spots.
The Tigers had home games with Carson and Wooster postponed this weekend because of a problem with the ventilation system in the DHS gym. They will make up the game with Carson on Wednesday at Douglas. The Wooster game will probably be rescheduled for the following week.
Douglas (3-4 in division play) was tied with Fallon for fourth place in the Division II standings heading into Friday’s games. Third-place Wooster (4-2) played at Fallon on Friday.
The postponing of this weekend’s games will mean the Tigers will play three games in each of the final two weeks of the division season.
They’ll travel to play at Fallon on Tuesday, will play host to Carson on Wednesday and host Hug High on Friday.
The following week, it’s a non-division home game with McQueen on Tuesday, the makeup game with Wooster and the regular-season finale at Reno on Friday.
“We played five games in Las Vegas (in a tournament in late December), but that was nothing like this,” Christen said. “The kids have to go to school all day, and there’s the long road trip to Fallon and the intensity of the playoff race. This is all new to us.”
Douglas defeated South Tahoe Tuesday to get back into the fourth-place tie with Fallon. Rosie Contri scored 19 points to lead the Tigers over the Vikings, who are winless in division play.
Nine players scored for Douglas and the Tigers managed to shut out the Vikings in the second quarter.
“We mixed up the defenses and the girls did a good job,” Christen said. “It was good experience to work on that in a game situation.
“It was a good team win.”
