Tigers pound Colts, 30-12
Douglas High halfback Monte McCann rushed for 211 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the Tiger freshman football team to a 30-12 victory over the Wooster Colts on Thursday at Keith Roman Field.
Fullback Tyler Fail added 95 yards on the ground as the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to the win.
The Douglas freshmen are 2-2.
Tigers head coach Mike Blackledge said his players executed a straight-forward game plan against Wooster.
“Basically, we just ran right at them,” Blackledge said. “Our offensive line blew them off the line of scrimmage and the backs ran real hard. The offensive line stood up and did a real good job.”
Offensive linemen Shane Jackson, Mike Grabow, Brandon Shupe, Jacob Ortiz and Kevin Jones all played very well, Blackledge said.
The coach also praised the effort of his defense. Strong safety Shane Cauley had an interception and the defensive line dominated the Colts.
Blackledge said defensive linemen Robert McCalla, Brian McGillivray, Shane Jackson, Dustin Karr and Chris Schmidt all had good games. Cauley and free safety Mike Garren also turned in good games.
“We shut them down, pretty much,” the coach said. “Our safeties came up and helped defend the run very well.”
