Tigers nab post-season soccer honors
Douglas senior Sarah Girdner has been named the Northern 4A Defensive Player of the Year by conference coaches in their recent postseason awards voting.
Girdner, who played sweeper for DHS, was one of three Tigers to earn All-Conference first-team soccer honors.
Douglas juniors Sarah Shearer and Julia Spaulding also received first-team recognition.
Shearer, who led the Tigers with 20 goals and 15 assists, was named to the first team as a midfielder.
Spaulding scored 16 goals and had 11 assists. She was voted to the first team as a forward.
Girdner, Shearer and Spaulding also were selected to the first team of the All-Division II squad in voting by division coaches prior to the playoffs.
Douglas also had three players selected to the All-Division II second team.
Junior fullback Mariah Weigel, sophomore forward Abby Aldrich and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio each earned a spot on the All-Division II second team.
Douglas’ senior stopper Erin Bell was an All-Division II honorable mention selection.
“I’m really happy for our girls who got the recognition,” Douglas coach Fred Schmidt said. “I think it reflected well on the team.
“Having two sophomores recognized on the all-league team is exciting. Having five players back who are all-league is nice, but it would have been nice if some of our seniors would have gotten a little more recognition.”
