Tigers advance in tennis
Douglas High seniors Dylan Berke and Josh Brown both advanced past their first-round singles matches Tuesday during the Northern 4A Region Tennis Tournament in Reno.
Berke, the No. 8 seed, defeated McQueen’s Mica Hill 6-0, 6-1 at Bishop Manogue High School. Brown, the No. 13 seed, dispatched Tyson Dayton of McQueen 6-0, 6-0.
The two Tigers advance to the second-round and face tests against seeded opponents Saturday at 9 a.m. Action on Friday was postponed due to weather.
Two Douglas boys doubles teams lost their matches. Zach Unger-Range Chapman came up short against Reed’s Tanner Clabaugh-Ryan Murphy, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Kindel Isham and Spencer Trivitt received a tough draw against Reno’s No. 1 seed Chase Gonfiantini-Nick Rinehart and lost 6-0, 6-0.
On the girls side, Shelby Casaus and Kelsey Carlson won their first-round doubles match Wednesday, 6-0, 6-0.
Maggie Rich, the No. 8 seed, beat Diane Du of Galena 6-1, 6-2.
The Douglas team of sisters Kari and Kylie Coziahr lost 6-3, 6-0 to Reno’s Jazlynn Parker and Jillian Rovetti. The Tigers’ Natalie Smith-Angelina Stein also lost 6-3, 6-3 to Reed’s Courtney Shinegawa and Samantha Schwartz.
Nikki Alexander lost 6-0, 6-2 to No. 2 seed Tara Chilton of Manogue, while Amanda Shaffer lost 6-0, 6-0 to McQueen’s No. 7 seed Clara Buck.
The top three finishers in each bracket qualifies for a return trip to Caughlin Athletic Club Friday and Saturday to play in the NIAA 4A State Tournament.
