Tiger girls rock Tahoe

Andrea Honer scored 14 points and Jessica Granat and Lauren Myers each finished with 10 points as the Douglas Tigers survived being called for 22 fouls in a 47-29 win over the Vikings at South Tahoe on Friday.

Douglas head coach Werner Christen said the shooting performance by Honer, who hit one three-pointer in each quarter, and the low-post play of Myers and Granat were among the highlights in a sloppy game that featured more whistles than field goals.

“It was like Roller Derby without the skates,” Christen said. “I was waiting for someone to call off the jam. It was horrendous.”

Granat also grabbed 14 rebounds, including seven in the second quarter, while Honer finished with six rebounds and Myers had five.

Another bright spot was team defense, according to assistant coach Allen Gosselin.

“We only gave up 18 points from the floor, that’s not bad,” Gosselin said. “Any time you can get outshot 25-8 at the free throw line and still win, you’re doing something right.

“I thought the girls showed composure and were able to stay focused despite what could have been a distracting foul situation.”

With the win, the Tigers improved to 2-0 in Division II play and 12-3 overall. Douglas played host to Carson Tuesday night and will travel to play at Fallon on Friday and at Hug on Saturday.

The Douglas freshman girls used a dominating run through the second and third quarters to dispose of South Lake Tahoe, 54-28, on Friday in the DHS gym.

Tigers outscored the Vikings 17-2 in the second quarter and 22-4 in the third period to put away the game.

Emily Haas scored a game-high 16 points to lead Douglas. Haas scored 12 points in the third quarter.

Cheryl Nicoll and Renee Boucher each finished with eight points for the Tigers.

Rebecca Wallstrum and Kristina DeCarlo added four points apiece as the Tigers improved their record to 9-1 overall.
