Tiger frosh sweep smith valley
The Douglas freshmen boys used tenacious defense and transition offense to jump out to a 26-0 lead against the Smith Valley junior varsity on Monday at Carson Valley Middle School.
The Tigers, who ended up scoring 34 points in the first quarter, then cruised to an 85-14 victory.
Dusty Cooper scored a season-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Zach Tretton scored 16 points, Patrick Hughes and Anthony Walter each added nine points and Brett Aitkenhead, Andy McIntosh and Bryan Miller scored eight points apiece.
“I was pleased how the players came out strong at the beginning of the game after having three days off from practice,” Douglas coach Brian Mehrer said. “All 10 of the players scored in the game. It was nice to have a game where we could work on all our offensive plays, and defensive footwork in the man-to-man.
“I give credit to the Smith Valley team for working their hearts out for the whole game. That says a lot about their players. I also give a lot of credit to my players for their continued hard work even when we were way up.”
Cooper scored 13 of 19 points in the first four minutes of the first quarter. The Tigers forced nine turnovers during that span and didn’t allow Smith Valley to attempt a field goal until midway through the first period.
