Thorson wraps up national midget series crown
Minden product Tanner Thorson celebrated Thanksgiving last Thursday in a big way when he wrapped up his USAC National Midget Series championship.
Thorson, 20, placed sixth at the 76th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix in Ventura, Calif., to maintain his slim lead in the season standings. He came into the season finale at Ventura Raceway with a nine-point lead over Keith Kunz and left with an 18-point lead.
Thorson had already secured his second straight National Midget Driver of the Year.
Warren Miller premier this weekend
Heavenly Ski Resort, Sports Ltd. and Lake Tahoe Ski Bum are presenting the premier of Warren Miller’s 67th film “Here, There & Everywhere” tonight and Saturday at Harrah’s Tahoe.
Showings on both nights start at 7:30 p.m.
Narration for the film is provided by 1998 Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley and on-screen interviews with the legendary Warren Miller “deliver the nostalgia of skiing’s roots and a zeal for discovering new terrain.”

Youth basketball opens sign-ups
Registration is now being taken for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation youth boys and coed basketball league season.
Players from first grade through high school — beginning to advanced levels — will have opportunities to participate in a program that emphasizes skill development and fun competition. Participants will be assigned to teams through a draft system. Games will be played one day each week with at least one planned practice each week.
The season will extend from Jan. 10 through March 27.
The cost of $80 ($90 after Dec. 15) includes T-shirt, awards and officials. A parent permission form must be completed at the time of registration.

Volleyball registration underway
Registration is underway for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation adult winter volleyball league season.
Women’s and coed B 6-on-6 leagues are being offered. The early registration period will remain open until Dec. 23, when a fee of $200 per team will be charged ($250 after that date). The registration deadline is Jan. 4.
Players must be at least 18 years old to participate. All registration is based on first-come, first-serve basis. Twelve players are allowed on a roster.
Adult flag football registration starts
Registration is under way for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation adult flag football league season.
The early registration period is open until Dec. 23, when a fee of $480 per team will be charged ($530 after that date). The season is due to kick off on Jan. 22. A managers meeting will be held Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
The league is for players 18 years of age and over. All registration is based on first-come, first-serve basis. Fifteen players are allowed to a roster. Each team will play a minimum of eight regular season games.
