Swimming: Cannon competes at Worlds

Carson Valley resident Richard Cannon, who returned to swimming just last year after a 25-year absence from the pool, competed at the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Goteborg, Sweden this week.

Swimming in the 50-54 men’s category, Cannon posted top 25 finishes in all four of his events, three of those being in the top 20.

Cannon’s best event was the 200 free, where he took 15th with a time of 2:22.04. Edgars Ozolins, of Latvia, won the world title in the event with a time of 2:08.00.

Cannon was 16th in the 400 IM (5:55.01), which was won by Marcus Mattioli of Brazil in a category world-record time of 4:53.69.

Mattioli also won 200 IM in meet record timing of 2:19.79 while Cannon was 18th at 2:42.61.

Cannon wrapped up his meet taking 21st in the 100 fly with a time of 1:13.88. The Netherlands’ Hugo Bregman won the event in 1:01.80.
