Youth football registration now open

Staff Reports

Registration is now being taken for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department-sponsored NFL Youth Flag Football program.

The league, for girls and boys in first through 12th grades, plays a season that kicks off on Aug. 1 and ends on Oct. 22. A player draft will start on Aug. 1 and regular season games begin on Aug. 27.

The cost of registration is $80 for all ages, $90 from July 16-27.

At least 40 volunteer coaches are needed for the third-fourth grade, fifth-sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade and high school leagues. Application and background checks are required of all coaches.

Golf event hosted by Empire Ranch club

Rene Ojeda, Bill Hammonds and Bill Bowers won their flight during the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club yellow ball tournament last Wednesday in Carson City.

The winning team combined to shoot a net 124 to win the “Yellow Ball” flight at Empire Ranch Golf Course. The format called for two scores per hole (yellow ball and lowest net score). One player played the yellow ball on each hole, with the yellow ball rotating through the team. If a yellow ball was lost, the team dropped to the lost yellow ball flight.

John Masiello, Nick Paul, Jim Green and John Lewis finished at 125 for second-place. Steve Scharfe, Lee Ghiglieri, Jim Norton and Tom Wickham finished third 129. Ray McPartlin, Joe O’Brien, Ron Popp and Ed Cabello took fourth at 131.

In the Lost Yellow Ball Flight, Pat Coons, Fred Coons, Rich Torok and Peter Yougdahl combined to capture first-place with a net score of 124.

Bill Gibson, Fred Olesek, Dick Montoya and Adam Huber shot 126 for second-place. Gary Mick, Don Swanson and Juan Lopez shot 127 for third-place.

Closest-to-the-pin winners included Torok on Blue No. 5, Donnie Curd on Blue No. 8, Pat Coons on White No. 4 and Dennis Justin on White No. 8.
