Menezes wins men’s golf club stroke play event

Marc Menezes carded a net 64 to capture a four-stroke victory Sunday during the Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club individual stroke play tournament.

Menezes won Flight A, while Charley Serafine and Dan Essary both shot 68 to place second and third respectively at the Carson Valley Golf Course. Ties were resolved by scores on selected holes.

Matt Lindsey won Flight B with his 67, followed by Roger Hala and Fred Coons at 69 in second- and third-place.

Jim Arens shot 66 to win Flight C, followed by Jack Zippwald and Gary Schreiber at 76 for second- and third-place.

Robert Van Nort shot 62 to win Flight D, followed by Jim Tavernier at 74 in second-place and John Guidicatti at 75 for third-place.

Closest-to-the-pin winners included Dave Morris on the first hole and Essary on No. 18.

Tierney leads at Empire Ranch

John Tierney holds a three-shot lead heading into the second and final round of the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club Championship Tournament today in Carson City.

Tierney shot a net 63 to take the opening round lead for Flight A in the individual stroke play event last Wednesday at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Bob Pemberton and Don Swanson followed at 66, while John Lopez and George Flamer trailed at 67.

Tom Teders holds a one-shot lead in Flight B after shooting 63, followed by Rick Torok and Tom Sawyer at 64. Chuck Bell and Robey Williams both shot 66.

Bob Pitcock leads Flight C with his 59, ahead of Donnie Curd at 61, Ray McPartlin at 63, Kurt Cleek at 66 and Gary Mick 66.

Maurice Dias and Joe O’Brien shot 62 to lead Flight D. Greg Bentley shot 63, Mel Ness at 65 and Tom Harlow 65.

Youth volleyball clinics offered

A series of volleyball classes has been scheduled for girls and boys in fifth through eighth grade at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center.

Dan Hannah is directing the classes for youth who wish to improve their volleyball skills. Four sessions for seventh and eighth grade students will be held 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays from Sept. 2 through Dec. 9. At the same time, four sessions for fifth and sixth graders will be held 6-9 p.m. on Fridays from Sept. 4 through Dec. 11.

The cost of each session includes $25 for Session 1 (two classes), $45 for Session 2 and Session 3 (three classes each) and $75 for Session 4 (five classes).

Elks Soccer Shoot Saturday

The annual Elks Soccer Shoot competition is Saturday at Lampe Park.

The contest is open to all boys and girls in the following divisions — 7 and under, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12-13.

Americans for Wounded Veterans golf on Sept. 5

Registration is now being accepted for the third annual Americans for Wounded Veterans Benefit Golf Tournament, which will be held on Sept. 5 at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City.

An 8:30 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled for for the four-man scramble best ball event. The entry fee is $95 per player, which includes morning refreshments and lunch. Proceeds benefit the Nevada Military Support Alliance.

Fall Classic tennis in Carson City

The 2015 Carson Tennis Club Fall Classic is set for Sept. 11-13 at Centennial Park in Carson City.

There will be men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and parent-child doubles. Also scheduled are women’s singles and women’s doubles. Youth singles also is being offered.

The cost is $30 for singles CTC members playing singles and $35 for non-members. Under 18 players the cost is $25 for singles and $20 per player in doubles. Entries are due by Sept. 9.

Carson Valley Fastpitch election scheduled

Carson Valley Fastpitch will hold elections for board positions at on Oct. 5 at the Douglas County Community Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane, across from Lampe Park.

The Monday meeting is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.

Anyone interested in filling a board position must submit a letter of intent, postmarked by Sept. 10, to the following address: Carson Valley Fastpitch, P.O. Box 2142, Minden, NV 89423. Letters may also be emailed to by no later than Sept. 13.

Office candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview for the Oct. 5 meeting. Attendance at this meeting will be mandatory.

Kiwanis Golf event Sept. 19

The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament is Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City.

The cost is $75, and there are six divisions. The senior division is open to golfers 55 and over.

There is a long drive in each division and closest to the hole. There will be putting tape and mulligans for sale.
