Meeting Saturday for boys lacrosse

An informational meeting for anyone interested in becoming involved with a Douglas boys lacrosse team will be held on Saturday morning at Gardnerville Elementary School.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on the field behind the main school building. The meeting will be held prior to the Douglas girls lacrosse team plays its High Sierra Lacrosse League contest at 10 a.m. against Reno.

Masiello-Paul win senior men's flight

John Masiello and Nick Paul combined to win Flight A last Wednesday during Empire Ranch Senior Men's Golf Club tournament play in Dayton.

The winning team shot a net 54 in the two-man team best ball event at Dayton Valley Golf Course, five shots ahead of Tony Barbaria and Terry Thomas in second-place. David Knighton and Bob Warzynski finished at 61 for third-place, one shot ahead of Marshall McCurdy and Tom Sawyer in fourth-place.

Norm Scoggin and Fred Perdomo carded a score of 53 to capture first-place in Flight B. Al Vernon and Tom Wickham shot 57 for second-place, Ralph Bothe and Bob White shot 58 for third-place while Jim Green and John Lewis shot 62 to take fourth-place.

Scoggin collected closest-to-the-pin honors on the 13th and 16th holes, while Bill Allen was the winner on No. 4 and Paul on No. 6.

Molly Awards applications are due Monday

Monday is the deadline for submitting applications from student-athletes for the Me-for-Incredible-Youth, Inc. (MEFIYI) Molly Awards.

The 13th annual Molly Youth Awards Banquet will be held on May 1 at the Carson Valley Inn. The event is named after former Douglas High School student-athlete Molly Lahlum.

Applicants eligible for this recognition must be Douglas County students between 9 and 18.

Student-athletes must qualify in each of following areas: academic excellence, athletic participation and community service.

Three $1,000 college scholarships will be awarded to seniors. Forty student-athletes will be selected for MEFIYI's 2017 class. A completed nomination form must be postmarked by mail or emailed no later than April 10.

Kids' Fishing Derby registration to continue

Registration has begun for the 28th annual Kids' Fishing Derby on June 3-4 at Lampe Park.

The derby, which is held for children 3-12 years of age, is now taking registration on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Walgreen's parking lot and will continue at the same time and location through April and May.

Registration is also available at Accolades Trophies during regular business hours.

Both locations also register derby volunteers and will also sell raffle tickets to help pay for fish, prizes, tackle and bait for the kids. The grand prizes for the raffle this year are a Mad Dog scooter, a kids quad and a $300 gift card from Sportsman's Warehouse.

Registration forms for mail in will also be available at the Douglas County Parks and Recreation desk in the community center.

Hunter safety class to be held on Saturday

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will host its final spring hunter safety class on Saturday.

The class will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and is limited to 35 students. Pre-registration is required. Visit NDOW.org or call the sheriff's administration office at 782-9900 for information.

Completion of a workbook is mandatory prior to the class. The workbook can be obtained at the sheriff's office or purchased online.

The cost is $5; registration fees for students under 18 are paid for by the Carson Valley Chukar Club. The class is certified and anyone who passes receives a certificate valid anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

The course covers such topics as wilderness survival, gun safety, wildlife habitat and conservation, archery and hunting regulations.

Douglas alumni golf tournament on June 16

The Douglas High School football program will host its sixth annual alumni golf tournament June 16 at the Carson Valley Golf Course.

The Friday event starts at 9 a.m. with a post-tournament luncheon to follow at the Carson Valley Country Club.

The cost is $100 per person for those who register before May 1 ($125 afterward) or $400 for a foursome. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100.

Booster golf tourney May 6-7 at Edgewood

Registration for the annual Booster Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood is open.

The tourney takes place May 6-7.

The event benefits Whittell and South Tahoe high schools.
