Locals earn medals at martial arts event

Nine local martial artists representing Northwest Martial Arts (NWMA) competed on Saturday and returned home with 17 medals from the Silicon Valley Open Taekwondo Championships in San Jose, Calif.
Team members ranged in age from 10 to 35 and competed in Poomse (traditional pattern), Combination Kicking and Sparring.
Team members had been preparing for about 12 weeks for their first tournament, according to instructor Nyls Rothfusz.
“They did remarkably well for this being their first tournament,” Rothfusz noted. “They were nervous to be sure, but they all went out there and competed their hearts out.”
Individual results of the competition included: Winter Woodside Sparring bronze, Poomse bronze; Kaylee Pierce, Sparring silver, Poomse gold, Combination Kicking gold; Zach Crawshaw, Sparring bronze, Poomse bronze; Trevor Crawshaw, Sparring bronze; Christine Crawshaw, Sparring bronze, Poomse bronze; Alyscn Simms, Poomse silver, Sparring gold; Steve Gaskell, Poomse gold, Sparring gold; David Jauregui, Poomse bronze, Sparring silver; Rocky DiMartino, Sparring bronze.
