Coleville hoops open season at tourney tonight

The Coleville High School girls and boys basketball teams open their season tonight at the annual Antelope Valley Lions Club Invitational.

Four schools will be represented in the tournament, which concludes on Saturday at Coleville’s Jackie Giorgi Gym.

Coleville’s girls face Big Pine at 6 p.m. and then the Coleville boys take on Big Pine at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

In earlier games the Sage Ridge and Lee Vining girls and boys play their games at 3 and 4:30 p.m.

The girls championship game on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the boys championship game is at 4:30 p.m.

Douglas wrestlers open at Capital Duals

The Douglas High wrestling team opens its season on Saturday at Carson High’s 16th annual Capital Duals.

The dual team tournament begins at 9 a.m. in Morse Burley Gym.

Douglas starts against Damonte Ranch at 9 a.m. The Tigers are also scheduled to take on Galena, Reno and Carson in their pool competition.

Douglas’ first-year head coach David Singer greeted a turnout of 33 wrestlers for the start of practice and enters the new season with an upbeat outlook.

“We started with 33 in the wrestling room and they’re all still there,” Singer said. “Shane Miller (Douglas’ 2012-13 coach) did a great job getting things going and hopefully we can keep building on that.”

Looking ahead on the schedule, the Tigers’ home opener will be the annual Carson Valley Lions Invitational on Jan. 11.

Elks Hoop Shoot

The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge 2670 is sponsoring its annual Elks Hoop Shoot National Basketball Free Throw Contest on Jan. 14 at Meneley Elementary School.

The contest, which starts at 3:45 p.m., is open to boys and girls age 8-13 in Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe.
