After-school volleyball program to start Aug. 28

An after-school volleyball playing program is set to begin on Aug. 28 at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center.
The program is directed by Dan Hannah and will focus on students in seventh through 10th grades on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 2:30-5 p.m. Teams will be formed and rotated to ensure fun competitive play as well as minimal sitting time.
The cost is $25 per week or $10 for daily drop-in participation. Call the community center at 782-5500, ext. 1 to register or for more information. Drop-in players will need a signed release form on file.
Also, coach Hannah's fall volleyball classes start with a session from Aug. 30-Sept. 22. Beginners meet Wednesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. at a cost of $60 per session, intermediate level players on Fridays from 5-6:30 p.m. at a cost of $65, and advanced players on Wednesday and Fridays from 7-8:30 p.m. at a cost of $120.
Silver Strike youth bowling sign-ups set for Saturday
Wink's Silver Strike Lanes youth program sign-ups will be held on Saturday.

Registration will be taken from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Wink's Silver Strike Lanes in the Gardnerville Ranchos. The cost is $35 overall or $9 per a week for bowling, which includes a shirt as well as local and registration through the U.S. Bowling Congress.
Preparation is also underway for the high school bowling club season. The cost for the season is $125, which covers registration for the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program. Practice will begin in late September.

WAVE fishing derby Sept. 30
Welcome All Veterans Everywhere (WAVE) will host its Fishing Derby on Sept. 30 at Topaz Lake.
The event will be held from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. as a fundraiser for WAVE's program to assist veterans. The entry fee is $50. Prizes for tagged fish include $2,500 for a gold tag, $1,000 for silver and $500 for bronze. Fifty other prizes worth at least $50 will also be available. Prizes will only be awarded for catches on the day of the event and will be limited to one prize per entry. A fishing license will be required.
Carson pancreatic cancer fundraiser on Sept. 16
Three sports — golf, running and power lifting — will be featured on Sept. 16 when the Carson City Kiwanis Club presents its fourth annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City.
The golf tournament is a four-person scramble starts at 9 a.m. A 5K fun run starts at 8 a.m. and the Carson City Bench Press Championships at 7 a.m.
The golf tournament fee is $90 per player, which includes range balls as well as lunch and prizes. Lunch tickets for guests can be purchased for $10. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.
The 5K fee is $30 and $10 for the kids half-mile 12-and-under fun run. The bench press fee is $10 for three lifts.
Proceeds benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network as well as the Carson City Kiwanis scholarship fund.
