Spanish Springs defeats Douglas
A nine-run second inning put Spanish Springs in command on its way to a 14-4 Northern 4A conference softball victory against Douglas on Thursday afternoon at home in Sparks.
The defending state champion Cougars added two more runs in the fourth inning and then scored three times in the fifth to close out the game on the 10-run rule in a matchup between top-three finishers at last year’s region tournament.
Douglas (2-2 conference, 3-7 overall) came back after falling behind 9-0 and answered with three runs in the top of the third. Casey Peck drew a leadoff walk, advanced on Kettja Bennett’s one-out single and both scored on Kylie Swan’s triple to left field. Swan scored moments later on a single by Amanda Hoffman, however, Spanish Springs freshman pitcher Tyra Clary struck out the next two batters to retire the side.
Clary pitched nine-hit ball over five innings to earn credit for the win.
Mackenzie Brixey went 2-for-3 with a first-inning triple and Hoffman 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Tigers offensively.
Amidori Anderson hit 3-for-4 with a double and triple, plus she scored four runs for Spanish Springs (4-0, 7-2).
Douglas saw its 2016 season end with a 7-4 loss against Spanish Springs at the region tournament. Both teams are still young, each with rosters that only include one senior.
